The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte, Ettal Abbey, and the District of Garmisch-Partenkirchen are jointly organising the Bavarian State Exhibition 2018 "Forests, Mountains and a King's dream – The Myth of Bavaria" in cooperation with the Bavarian State Forestry and the Bavarian Forestry Administration. From May 3 to November 4, 2018, the “Myth of Bavaria” will become tangible reality, in a place perfectly suited to the three main themes of “Forests, Mountains and a King's dream": Ettal Abbey, in the Ammergauer Alps.

Famed for its Baroque basilica and the Rococo sacristy, Ettal Abbey is surrounded by picturesque mountains, high forests and royal castles. The Bavarian Alps: massive mountains, impenetrable forests, and rushing rivers. This region, once considered unconquerable and hostile to life, was gradually seized by the Celts and Romans. Tracks and passes to the south were created; wayside inns, monasteries and villages were built in the cleared regions, and man gradually tamed what had once been inhospitable and inaccessible. Much later, this landscape became a retreat and place of longing for the fairytale king Ludwig II. In the exhibition "Forests, Mountains and a King's dream – The Myth of Bavaria" we make his unbuilt royal dreams a reality!

The myth begins in the foothills of the Alps

The exhibition takes the visitor through different panoramas: across mountains, through forests and along rivers. What were the main features of this landscape over the millennia? How did the people here - Celts, Romans and Bavarians – establish their respective environments? And how did the landscape itself change, along with its inhabitants? In "Forests, Mountains and a King's dream", forest paths become adventure trails, the woods and mountains reveal their secrets, and a monastery garden is brought back to fascinating life. We show how man transformed these forests and mountains, and why the myth of Bavaria has its origins in the foothills of the Alps.

For the exhibition, the monastery will renovate its southern wing and revive its ancient monastery garden. In addition to the presentation of high-quality exhibits across an area measuring approximately 1,500 square metres in the Abbey’s historical interior, an exciting outdoor area is being planned. The Bavarian State Exhibition 2018 will also be accompanied by an elaborate educational and cultural programme.
