The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte, the district of Passau and the municipality of Aldersbach, in cooperation with the Aldersbach Brewery, will be presenting the Bavarian State Exhibition 2016 entitled "Beer in Bavaria" from April 29 to October 30. The exhibition will be held in the district of Passau, one of the oldest cultural landscapes of Bavaria – and the occasion is the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian Beer Purity Law.

The venue for the Bavarian State Exhibition is the former Cistercian abbey of Aldersbach, in the Lower Bavarian municipality of the same name. An exhibition area measuring some 1,400 square metres will be used to present the cultural history of beer – a beverage of almost mythical significance for the Bavarians. It is a trade mark of the state, and still a distinctive feature of its international image. The exhibition will focus on the beer culture in general, beer-brewing monasteries and abbeys, state-owned breweries, beer monopolies and also beer riots, brewing pioneers and numerous other aspects of beer consumption. The exhibits will include valuable drinking vessels, charming historical treasures from Bavaria's brewing guilds, or famous beer-related paintings. Modern media installations and projections will use oast houses, mash tuns and other authentic historical brewing equipment to bring the past back to life.

The exhibition is also in a perfect location. Beer was brewed at Aldersbach Abbey as long ago as the 13th century. Today, visitors can learn about beer production in a historic brewery and also in the modern demonstration brewery. The ensemble of buildings at the fully preserved abbey complex – with its historic brewery, its Lower Bavarian tavern and the famous Cistercian abbey church of "Mariä Himmelfahrt" – is quite unique. In 1720 the church was redesigned in the Baroque style by the famous Asam brothers, and today is one of the finest Marienkirchen in Bavaria. History, baroque splendour, beer, brewing – all of it is combined in Aldersbach.

An extensive programme of events is being planned to accompany the Bavarian State Exhibition. Visitors can spend many happy hours in the festival tent with its delicious dishes and beer specialities. Concerts from classical to oompah, cabaret evenings, a beer trade fair with a special brewing festival, and exciting beer-tasting events featuring brews from all over Bavaria will round off the "Beer in Bavaria" festival, making Aldersbach even more of a fascinating excursion destination.
